Dance Noir

October 15, 2016 at 8pm / October 16, 2016 at 7pm

Dance Noir is Dissonance Dance Theatre's annual, mixed-evening program of dance works built around dark, dramatic classical scores. These works tell narrative stories through a blend of contemporary and modern dance styles.

With the age of movies encompassing our lives, the feel of cinematic music scores shapes how we view narrative. From video ads to TV, documentaries, and blockbuster films, music transcends reminds us, of time, place, and story. Dance Noir celebrates the composers who make the moments memorable.

12x6

Choreography by Shawn Short

Inspired by Reginald Rose's 12 Angry Men and Frigyes Karinthy's Six Degrees of Separation. 12x6 examines personal connections between strangers, friends, and loved ones; divided into five section inspired by our five senses. 12x6 captures "private moments in a public place", exploring the "humanoidal seasoning" that brings warmth, bitter, sour, and sweet to our existence.

Minimalism becomes the common musical denominator. Ezio Bosso, Patrick O' Hearn, and Philip Glass’ scores fill 12x6 with color, texture and emotional saturation.

Hope

World Premiere

Choreography by Shawn Short

The French-song, Vole Mon Ange, sung by Linda Eder provides the musical backdrop for female solo titled Hope. Heartbreak, simple truths, and hope for love emulsify to fuel this Moulin Rouge-inspired pointe shoe adorned work.

Shall We Dance

World Premiere

Choreography by Shawn Short

First school dance awkwardness meets strong will and tenderness in this pas de deux danced to Chopin's Nocturne In E Flat Major, Op.9 No.2.
